We humans seem rather unique on Earth in our ability to divorce ourselves from the natural rhythms of life. This capacity comes along for the ride as part of our inherent freedom of choice and our ability to manipulate our environment.
So, for example, we can choose to live most of our lives indoors (either in buildings or in moving vehicles), relatively immune to and unaware of the changing seasons. We can ignore the rhythm of the moon’s cycle of waxing and waning. We can choose to ignore or delay many of the natural rhythms of our bodies, such as when to rest, when to sleep and when to rid ourselves of body waste.
It seems that we have lost our sense of “organic timing”.
And why should we even care? Is this movement away from nature’s rhythms simply an inevitable reflection of the evolutionary march toward human freedom?
What have we lost by falling out of rhythm with Nature?
